| ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS IN SCHOOLS |

Increasing population and growing consumerism are resulting in depletion of natural resources, environmental pollution and poverty in developing countries. As future custodians of our environment and who can also influence their parents, children can play a major role in protecting the environment, if they are oriented in school.
On behalf of the Government of India, BAIF has been promoting environmental awareness in Maharashtra and Goa through people's organisations, non-governmental organisations and educational institutions since 1986. This programme has been creating tremendous awareness among children and their parents, and a large number of schools are coming forward to participate in such environmental awareness programmes.
Under this programme, BAIF has been providing orientation, training and attractive literature on various themes and the schools have been organising lectures, drawing and essay writing competitions, film shows, interactive meetings and field oriented activities such as raising of nurseries, planting of trees, vermicomposting, recycling of garbage, conservation of water, promotion of organic farming, etc. which have helped in creating greater awareness and enriching the environment.
Presently, BAIF is supporting over 1000 schools in Maharashtra and the benefits are reaching thousands of children and their families. Looking at the positive impact, thousands of new schools are approaching us for support. Hence, our goal is to assist 10,000 schools in Maharashtra over the next five years.
To organise such environmental awareness campaigns all over Maharashtra, the financial assistance needed per school is Rs. 10,000 per school. With the initial training and inputs, the schools are encouraged to tap additional resources from the public. We appeal to you to adopt a few schools by extending financial support to the tune of Rs. 10,000 per school. We will be happy to send the names of the schools receiving your support and will keep you updated with their progress and achievements.
