| Realising the need to create greater awareness among the industries and their employees about the benefits of establishing industrial greenbelts, BAIF developed appropriate technology for growing trees under harsh conditions even on hilly terrains and dry lands, using treated industrial effluents. On the barren lands of the Maharashtra Gas Cracker Complex at Nagothane in Raigad district, industrial greenbelt was undertaken on 400 hectares in 1986. Community development was also a critical aspect of the greenbelt development programme resulting in active participation of the local people and greater awareness among the general public. This project is serving as an excellent demonstration for other industries. The hallmarks of this programme are low cost technology, economic viability and replicability. |
