Research for Development
The Central Research Station (CRS) at Urulikanchan, near Pune, is engaged in problem-oriented research,
development of appropriate rural technologies, training and production of critical inputs for promotion of
sustainable development in rural India. The campus spread over 200 ha, houses the following activities :
Livestock Development
Bull Mother Farm and Bull Station : The farm was established in 1970 to produce bulls and bull mothers of
exotic and native breeds with suitable
characters for Indian conditions by
importing genetically superior heifers of
Jersey and Holstein Friesian (HF) breeds
from Denmark and Canada. Frozen semen
of high genetic value from Denmark,
Canada, Great Britain, USA, France and New
Zealand is used for improving the nucleus
stock.
The farm houses around 500 animals with
more than 300 bulls of Jersey, HF and their
crosses, Gir, Sahiwal, Khillar, Amritmahal,
Hallikar, Tharparkar, Dangi, Ongole breeds of cattle, Surti, Murrah, Banni, Bhadavari and Jafrabadi buffaloes.
Semen Freezing Laboratory : This ISO 9001 laboratory established in 1975, produces over 7 million doses of
frozen semen annually for supplying to BAIF's livestock development programme and to other organisations in India and abroad.
Progeny Testing of Sires : 15 young bulls under semen collection are selected every 18 months to evaluate
their genetic potential and to identify sires to improve the milk yield and other performance traits of the
progenies. Presently, 10 proven sires are under semen collection and semen of over 45 proven sires is in
stock.
